From the time you start puberty to the time you graduate high school, all you can think about is moving out of and away from your parents. Well that is my case as well. All though I've had a few set backs but now i am 22 and I have my own apartment. The reason I have my own place now is because my mother sold my only home right out from under me, literally. I came home one night and she said pack your shit and get. She told me I had to be out and have a place in two weeks. Well I found an awesome place, or so I thought. The apartment that I found was awesome at first sight. However, after living there for about 3 months I have realized otherwise. There are a few problems such as a heating system that can't be controlled from my apartment, a kitchen area that is much less the desirable, and the apartment is haunted. This apartment building had bats living in it for about 2 months. Since this apartment building has this many problems I have decided to move out and find a new place.
I looked at two apartments in this same building and decided to take the second one. This one was on the fourth floor. This meant I had to carry all my belongings up 3 flights of stairs. When I had everything moved up there I realized that it was warm. However, I just thought it was because it was a hot day out. I soon discovered different. I don't know why the heat was on during the summer, except for the fact that the system was broken and ran all the time. Since heat rises and i am on the top floor my apartment got all the heat from the building. I could deal with that though because I had two box fans in the windows. The actually heater in my apartment is one of those old iron ones. Well this heater I could throw out the window. There have been many nights when this thing doesn’t turn off. I don't mean it throws off a little heat, this throws off heat like the sun. One night I woke up and heard a hissing sound like a snake. I opened the door to the living room and almost feel flat on my ass. The living room temperature was 95 degrees. The fucking heater made that snake like sound for over two hours. The two box fans in the windows were not helping cool the apparent down either. I just had to suffer with the above normal temperature for the night. I let my landlord know about the heater but she didn't do a damn thing because I had already given my notice to her that I was moving out. Well the heater was a pain in the ass for 3 more nights. The heater is just one of the many problems with this apartment.
I love to cook and since I do I like to have a nice organized kitchen. The kitchen in this apartment at first sight was very organized and spacious. I had everything in the place I wanted it to be to make my job in the kitchen just as smooth as it could be. After a couple weeks of a smooth operation, I woke up one morning and the refrigerator was off. I knew that the outlet blew a fuse. Well I called the landlord and she said the maintenance guy would be over later to fix it. I had an extinction cord that I ran from the refrigerator across the kitchen to the outlet that worked. Well that same morning I wanted toast and the outlet where the toaster was plugged into also blew a fuse. Not only do I have one extinction cord for the refrigerator I have another one for the toaster and microwave. Having extinction cords in my kitchen pisses me off because it makes my kitchen look like hell. I hate having to look at the floor when i am in the kitchen so I don’t step on or trip over the cords that shouldn't be there. A couple days past and the fuses were still not fixed so I called the landlord again. She said the maintenance guy had fixed them but I assured her that the outlets still were not working. After another week I just figured that the landlord really didn't give a shit about me or this apartment. At that point I started to look for a new apartment.
I think it should be a law for landlords to let you know what has happened to the apartment and to the building. I mean they should let you know if someone has died there. Well my landlord did not make me aware of this. About 18 years ago there was a young man about my age living in this same apartment. One day him and his brother tried to hook up the cable and tried to get on the roof. The man living in the apartment didn't make it up on the roof and fell four stories and died instantly. There also was another death at this apparent building. Around 8 years ago there was a shoot out with the police in front of the building and the police killed a man on the front steps. In my apartment there is a door that goes to the attic. This door is a small door and is always open about an inch. I have closed the door many times and friends have watched me close it and put things in front of the door so I shouldn't come open. However, the boxes are always moved and the door open. At night I can hear my kitchen draws opening and closing and also the door going to the deck opens and closes by itself. There have been other strange things happening in the apartment but you just wouldn't believe it. I almost forgot to mention the bats. That’s right, this apartment building has bats. Well, it did for 2 months anyway.
As I have looked for a new apartment I have been doing some background information. I have been looking at the heating systems and asking all sorts of questions about the buildings. I ask things like how old are the heating system, how the electrical is work in the apartment, and has anyone ever died here. Just questions that I need to know. I am hoping that my next place of my own will be better then my first bad apartment experience.
